Wow, this year has flown by, and here we are wrapping it up! If you’re reading this, hopefully, you’re just days away from slamming your laptop shut until 2025.
Before we sign off, let’s take a quick look at what we built this year. From big releases to those little updates that make a big difference.
Design Update: A New Foundation
This year, we took the first steps in refreshing Hub Planner’s design, laying the groundwork for a more cohesive and intuitive experience.
Rather than an overhaul, this redesign was an iterative process, ensuring we preserved the core functionality our users rely on while refining the interface step by step. The rollout offered glimpses of the new direction, visible in features like multi-select and extended repeat options, hinting at what’s to come.
As our lead designer, Sean Stuart, put it “This is just the beginning and we’re already excited about the next new things we’re working on and the evolution of Hub Planner. We’ll continue to commit our time to making Hub Planner not just look good, but work better for you. We think you’ll love the result – a tool that’s more intuitive, more efficient, and ultimately more enjoyable to use.” More to come on this in 2025.
TOIL
Based on your input, we built Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) to give teams more flexibility in managing overtime. Fully integrated with Timesheets and the Vacation dashboard, TOIL makes it easy to track accrued hours and use them as leave.
“TOIL gives us a seamless way to reward overtime while keeping everyone balanced,” said one user. Managers can customize policies, set accrual rates, and ensure transparency—all in one place. It’s a flexible solution designed to fit the fast-paced demands of today’s teams.
Multi-Select
Multi-Select was one of those features we welcomed—and we hope you did too—with open arms. While drag-and-drop is powerful, sometimes you need to make changes in bulk.
With Multi-Select, you can now select and adjust multiple bookings at once. Move bookings horizontally or shift them up or down to another resource or project. It’s a simple addition that adds convenience and flexibility to your scheduling process.
Custom Fields Redesign
Custom Fields has always been a favorite in Hub Planner, allowing users to tailor resource management to their unique needs. From creating skill lists to filtering by location, Custom Fields gives you the flexibility to define what matters most to your team.
This year, we refreshed the UI to make it even easier to use.
Simplified Interface: A cleaner, more intuitive layout minimizes clutter, making navigation quick and seamless.
Improved Drag-and-Drop: Enhanced responsiveness and real-time visual feedback make creating and rearranging fields smoother than ever.
Resource Request Workflow
With the resource request approval flow being the backbone of your scheduling process, we focused on improving it this year. A smarter notification system now keeps everyone in the loop, ensuring updates are clear and timely.
When the workflow runs smoothly, it creates opportunities to assign people based on priority, skills, and potential value—driving better project and business outcomes. While roles and flow are essential, communication is just as critical. The updated notifications simplify this further, cutting down on back-and-forth and making collaboration more efficient.
Resource and Project groups (UI)
As part of the new design roll-out, we focused on improving Resource and Project Groups to make managing people and projects more intuitive. While the logic stayed the same, we made several tweaks to simplify the experience.
Compact Design: The updated UI takes up less screen space, streamlining the workflow.
Improved Layout: Columns are better contained, with resized buttons for a cleaner interface.
Unified Search: A single search field replaced multiple filters, allowing you to filter all columns at once.
Clearer Selections: Enhanced visibility ensured you knew exactly what’s selected at any time.
Extended Repeat
If you’re responsible for resourcing some days might be very heavy on the scheduling side of things. Scheduling tasks is simply a big part of the job. To decrease the amount of scheduling – we added more repeat options. It was a straightforward update, but a big time saver for our Resource Planners.
Repeat options: Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, and Custom.
Capacity Finder
This year, another loved feature – Capacity Finder also received a design update to help you get a quicker read on your team’s capacity.
While the functionality and logic stayed the same, we introduced a slimmer modal, new icons, clearer language to guide you through the flow, and improved visualization of the output.
Report builder redesign
Another area that received design attention this year was the Report Builder. Whether you’re starting from scratch or using one of the many templates available, the updated design focused on simplifying the process of building your own reports.
Little small updates
Every feature we shipped this year—big or small—was shaped by your feedback. While it’s easy to focus on headline features, sometimes it’s the little updates that make the biggest difference. These subtle changes simplify workflows, save time, and make everyday tasks more efficient.
Dependency Line Options
Another small little helpful update that came froma user request – Customize the width of dependency lines between projects according to your preference for clearer visual control.
Report: Group by booking
Some of our users were looking for a line by line booking list report. This was the back-story to another small little update. We then introduced the option to group your reports by booking.
Full-screen option
We’re a big fan of all these little updates you helped us shape and build through out the year. Another wish from our user base. Go full-screen on all builder modals.
2025: Taking resourcing further
It’s been great to look back and recap everything we’ve built together with our incredible user base. This year, we focused on a mix of introducing our new design foundation, delivering major releases, and shipping smaller but impactful updates.
“2024 was epic, and all about laying the foundation of what is going to come in 2025. We introduced some nice new features this year, but the one that stands out for me was the introduction of our new design system. This new system not only allows our team to release more consistent product updates, but also helped create a much improved way of working between our Design and Dev teams. Everyone wins! The product is the beating heart of Hub Planner, and we will continue to be committed to evolving the product, upgrading the user experience and delivering on our promise of being the best resource management tool on the market. Bring on 2025! Mic drop…..”
